Former Qatar chairman handed 20 year prison sentence

Ali Sharif Al-Emadi, a former chairman of Qatar Airways has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for money laundering. He was found guilty of laundering more than $5bn, as well as other charges such as bribery, abuse of power and more.

He was handed the jail sentence and a $16.7bn fine on the 10th January 2024. He was arrested in May 2021. Cases involving corruption against high profile individuals was previously unheard of, however certain exceptions that gave ministers immunity were abolished in 2021, just before Emadi's arrest.

Qatar Airways have not commented on the situation.
