Lufthansa Airbus A330 suffers engine malfunction

A Lufthansa Airbus A330 diverted to Frankfurt Airport on Wednesday following an engine malfunction.

This aircraft was bound for Houston in Texas on the 31st January 2024, when the flight crew began noticing signs of an engine malfunction. The flight took off from Frankfurt in Germany, and approximately 1 hour 30 minutes later, problems began. Just off the coast of France, the crew took the decision to return to Frankfurt (FRA) in Germany.

The flight crew reported that the aircraft experienced increased noise and vibration compared to normal. Emergency services were on standby in Frankfurt when the aircraft made an emergency landing 3 hours after takeoff.

The flight was subsequently cancelled and this aircraft has not operated any flights since.

The aircraft in question is just under 12 years old, being delivered brand new to Lufthansa in 2012. It is powered by two Rolls Royce Trent 700 engines.

This incident comes after another Lufthansa flight recently suffered difficulty following a bird strike, on the 19th January 2024.
